Happy Diwali. Shubh Diwali.

Diwali Festival, which is also known as Festival of Lights, is celebrated for five consecutive days at the end of Hindu month of Ashwayuja. Diwali, Deepavali, Dipavali, Dewali or Deepawali, marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year and celebrated on the 15th day of Kartika in the Hindu calendar. In Gregorian calendar, it is celebrated between mid-October and mid-November and is one of the most popular and eagerly awaited festivals in India.
People in different regions in India may celebrate Diwali on various dates because traditional lunar calendars can be interpreted in different ways. For example, Deepavali in Tamil Nadu is celebrated in the Tamil month of Aippasi. Diwali is a very special day for millions of Indians living all over the world, because the day will witness the coming together of Indians as one single community in celebrating their grand festival, Diwali.
Deepawali, Diwali, or Festival of Lights is certainly the biggest, brightest and one of the most auspicious Hindu festivals to celebrates the victory of good over evil. Rangoli enlightens the festival with different colors besides fire crackers. Hindus and Sikhs alike regard it as a celebration of life and use the occasion to strengthen family and social relationships.

To add to the festival of Diwali, mela or religious fairs are held throughout India. These are found in many towns and villages.

The third day of Diwali is believed to be the most auspicious day. This is when Lakshmi Puja, or the worship of the goddess of wealth is performed. On the evening of Diwali, people open their doors and windows to welcome Goddes Lakshmi, and place diya lights on their windowsills and balcony ledges to invite her in. With pomp and ceremony, Goddess Lakshmi is invited into the homes of devotees to partake of the gifts that are part of the puja.

On the same night that Hindus celebrate Deepavali, Jains celebrate a festival of lights to mark the attainment of moksha by Mahavira, and Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas. Diwali is an official holiday in Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Mauritius, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, Malaysia, Singapore, Fiji, and the Australian external territory of Christmas Island. What the Festival of Lights really stands for today is a reaffirmation of hope, a renewed commitment to friendship and goodwill, and a religiously sanctioned celebration of the simple and some not-so-simple joys of life.
